        <p>Kevin Dick, Nevada Small Business Development Center, was caught in the act of improving our community&#8217;s quality of life for chairing the 2008 “greenUP!” campaign.&nbsp; This ongoing promotional campaign not only engaged and educated members of the business community, local governments, educational institutions, and other public/private/nonprofit agencies to become more environmentally aware, but also showcased environmental issues toward building a more sustainable community.&nbsp; Visit <a href="http://greenupdays.org/">2009 greenUP</a> for more information on this year&#8217;s campaign beginning in April.

Through his work, Kevin has positively impacted all of our community&#8217;s Innovation, Land Use &amp; Infrastructure, and Natural Environment indicators.

      <title>Stuart Gordon, Family Counseling Services &#8220;Caught in the Act&#8221; of running a mental health nonprofit for those with limited financial resources</title>

        <p>Stuart Gordon, Family Counseling Services, was caught in the act of improving our community&#8217;s quality of health for running one of the few mental health nonprofits in the community for people who have limited financial resources.&nbsp; A staff of psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists and substance abuse counselors offer counseling services addressing multiple issues present in a person’s life, including general mental health.&nbsp; Services are offered on a sliding scale.
</p>
<p>
Through his work, Stuart has positively impacted the Health &amp; Wellness:&nbsp; <i>mental health and social wellbeing</i> indicator.

        <p>Dave Kary and George Tackett, Sparks Rotary,  were caught in the act of improving our community’s quality of life by leading and completing the Sparks Rotary&#8217;s <i>Dictionary Project</i> in 2008 to donate a dictionary to every third grader in Washoe County.

Through their work, Dave and George have positively impacted the Education and Lifelong Learning:&nbsp; <i>literate community</i> indicator.

      <title>Don Gable, Nevada Army Guard &#8220;Caught in the Act&#8221; of removing abandoned vehicles from open space areas</title>

        <p>Don Gable, SFC, Nevada Army Guard, was caught in the act of improving our community’s quality of life for the efforts to keep our open spaces clear of abandoned vehicles.  The Guard coordinates and implements the helicopter removal of abandoned vehicles that cannot be removed by land.  Abandoned vehicles left in open space areas are a public safety and fire hazard.
</p>
<p>
Through his work, Don has positively impacted the Natural Environment Indicator:&nbsp; <i>open space access &amp; connectivity</i>, as well as the Public Wellbeing Indicator:&nbsp; <i>perception of safety</i> (as measured by the perception of fire safety).

        <p>Mark Struble, Public Affairs Officer, Bureau of Land Management, was caught in the act of improving our community’s quality of life for doing such an outstanding job in promoting and involving the public in BLM projects and events, and for raising public awareness about open space issues.  
</p>
<p>
Through his work, Mark has positively impacted the Natural Environment Indicator:&nbsp; <i>open space access &amp; connectivity</i>.&nbsp; Mark has even been known to go out on his own time and use his own vehicle to remove debris left at illegal dump sites.

        <p>Betty Rose, United Way of Northern Nevada &amp; the Sierra (UW) was caught in the act of improving our community through UW’s volunteer-driven, allocation process funding community programs that further improve our Quality of Life.
</p>
<p>
For almost 10 years, Betty has run a high-level, volunteer-driven process for allocation of funds to community programs.&nbsp; UW&#8217;s Community Impact volunteers work together to address the most pressing issues that affect the Quality of Life in our community.&nbsp; Their conscientious volunteer efforts and decisions result in the allocation of $1 million to health and wellness, basic needs and youth services making a real difference in the community we share and serve.
</p>
<p>
Through her work with both these programs, Betty has positively impacted Enrichment and the Philanthrophy &amp; Volunteerism Indicator. 
</p>

        <p>Neecie Schlesener and James Pezonella, Truckee Meadows Water Authority have been caught in the act improving our community’s Quality of Life by educating school children about one of our most valuable natural resources--water.
<br />
 
<br />
Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) receives many requests to speak to any of a variety of groups, ranging from the Rotary Clubs to school children.  It is this last group where Neecie and James excel.  Their infectious enthusiasm regarding their topics enables them to inform and educate thousands of children about the importance and responsible uses of one of our areas most precious resources…water.  They do this in an entertaining and engaging manner, and while they truly enjoy speaking to the kids, they really take the responsibility of educating the children seriously--from various water sources to efficient water consumption whether for drinking water, recreation or wildlife habitat for today and into the future.
</p>
<p>
Through their work in TMWA&#8217;s education programs, Neecie and James have positively impacted our Natural Environment through the Clean &amp; Available Water Indicator.

      <title>Nancy Brown, Charles Schwab Bank &#8220;Caught in the Act&#8221; for creating partnerships between banks and nonprofits helping people become financially stable</title>

        <p>Nancy Brown, Charles Schwab Bank was caught in the act of improving our community&#8217;s Quality of Life for creating partnerships between banks and nonprofits helping people become financially stable.&nbsp; 
</p>
<p>
Nancy has been developing community partnerships for a long time, including TMT&#8217;s affordable housing quality of life compact started late in 2004 with other banks and nonprofit partners.&nbsp; Since then the community&#8217;s capacity to deal with affordable housing issues has improved including over $400,000 in housing grants and funding awards in Washoe County, development of a data base that identifies housing resources and needs, 387 new units of affordable housing, and improved financial literacy for many  lower income families.
</p>
<p>
Through her work with these programs, Nancy has positively impacted our Economic Wellbeing through the Individual &amp; Family Economic Wellbeing Indicator, as well as our Land Use &amp; Infrastructure through the Affordable Housing Indicator.
</p>

        <p>Rebecca LeBeau, Child Assault Prevention (CAP) was caught in the act of improving our community&#8217;s Quality of Life through her work helping young children deal with abusive adults.
</p>
<p>
Rebecca focuses on keeping young children ‘safe, strong, and free’ through her free trainings to 2nd and 4th graders on how to deal with bullies, strangers and trusted adults.&nbsp; Each year the program is presented to about 10,000 elementary students in Washoe County classrooms. The interactive abuse prevention workshops teach children skills to use to protect themselves from the abusive situations they may encounter with others, including family members, as well as how to ask a trusted adult for help.
</p>
<p>
Through her work with both these programs, Rebecca has positively impacted our Public Wellbeing and the Secure Families Indicator. 
</p>

      <title>Lynda Nelson &#8220;Caught in the Act&#8221; for her work with the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup and Illegal Dumping Task Force</title>

        <p>Lynda Nelson, Planning Manager, Washoe County Regional Parks &amp; Open Space, was caught in the act of improving our community&#8217;s quality of life through all of her work with the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup and Illegal Dumping Task Force.
</p>
<p>
The 2008 Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup resulted in the removal of 116 tons of trash, over 500 tires and 11 abandoned vehicles from the Truckee Meadows region.
</p>
<p>
The Illegal Dumping Task Force was created to address the best ways to educate the Truckee Meadows community of the ramifications of illegal dumping in our open spaces.
</p>
<p>
Through her work with both these programs, Lynda has positively impacted the Natural Environment Indicators as well as the Civility &amp; Neighborhood Pride Indicator. 
</p>
