Truckee Meadows Tomorrow and United Way of
Northern Nevada and the Sierra Announce
New Comprehensive Quality of Life Compact
Truckee Meadows Tomorrow (TMT) has announced its fourth quality of life compact. This one, which will address all 30 of TMT’s quality of life indicators, is with the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS).
United Way plans to work with its funded partner agencies to expand results and to identify and address community-wide needs.
“We’re delighted that United Way is modeling the way to the rest of the community. They are demonstrating how agencies and individuals can work together to affect significant change in quality of life indicators,” said Karen Foster, TMT president. “This compact sets a new standard on how an increased level of commitment to indicators in day to day life can reap great rewards for all of us,” she added.
Quality of life compacts are formal, voluntary agreements between TMT and one or more individuals or organizations that work together to improve quality of life indicators. It’s been called the “next step” to TMT’s Adopt-an-Indicator program in that it combines like efforts for a focused, coordinated approach.
“This new compact expands United Way’s role in promoting and measuring quality of life improvements in partnership with TMT,” said Karen Barsell, UWNNS vice president of community investment and development and a TMT board member. “United Way already funds almost $1 million each year in support of work on TMT indicators. Through our partners, we are excited about investing in and reporting on programs and results that return broad benefits to the community.”
The first compact, with Washoe County in 2001, focused on a number of natural environment programs and the second compact addressed open space with the Nevada Land Conservatory, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Hands on Northern Nevada (a United Way program), Sierra Pacific Power Co. and the Girl Scouts of the Sierra. A third compact was announced last January with the Washoe County School District and the Washoe County Teachers Association. Parental involvement in schools is its focus.
The new compact between the UWNNS and TMT not only supports existing indicators, but will also surface emerging quality of life issues. The two agencies have been longstanding supporters of each other being as both share similar missions of improving the area’s quality of life.
