According to the American Red Cross, only 7% of Americans are prepared in the advent of a disaster. The Northern Nevada Chapter provides training and information on how to be prepared, especially important for during fires or possible earthquakes. It is not the only organization helping people be prepared in northern Nevada, but their fiscal year stats provide an indication of how ready the community might be if disaster strikes, as well as response to emergency incidents.

Typically, emergency preparedness includes having an emergency kit that would allow you to be self-sufficient for up to three days and having a battery-operated radio, as well as a family emergency plan that’s been practiced. And don't forget about safegarding important documents:
- Wills, healthcare directives and trust agreements
- Birth certificates, passports, marriage/divorce and child custody records
- Social Security and important financial information (banking, credit card and investments)
- Home ownership records, insurance policies, household and other personal inventories
- Medical and vaccination/immunization records
In TMT’s December 2007 community survey, only 45.2% of respondents reported being totally or somewhat prepared for an emergency vs. 25.6% being somewhat or totally unprepared. This compares to 33.4% of the same respondents reporting that their place of employment is somewhat or totally prepared vs. 12.2% reporting that their place of employment was somewhat or totally unprepared for an emergency.
These percentages compare to the 24% of TMT November 2007, eSurvey business respondents reporting that their business did not have a disaster response plan to deal with emergencies and disasters.
