Recreation Data

Having access to the types of recreation and recreational facilities (such as parks programs, public trails, museums, music venues, sporting events, community service facilities) allows everyone to regularly participate in opportunities enriching life and health, while at the same time retaining skilled workers. This is a new indicator identified by the community in the 2006 update process.

Access to local recreation facilities and playgrounds seems to be keeping pace with population growth in the region. Whether these facilities are in close proximity to residential areas is another question. Travel distance and time impact access to recreational opportunities. [Note that recreation access rates are not calculated for the City of Sparks, as their population remains below 100,000 residents.]

The 2011 County Health Rankings began tracking a new recreation facilities access rate using 2008 data.  Below are the 2008 rates per 100,000 population counties in northern Nevada:

  • Carson City  16
  • Clark                6
  • Douglas        11
  • Storey              0
  • Washoe        10

This is a new indicator, currently with few data metrics available. Identifying the barriers to the access to outdoor and indoor recreation opportunities, whether parks and recreation programs, public trails, sporting events, recreational facilities or other is necessary to understanding new ways to promote existing recreation and recreational facilities. In TMT’s December 2007 community survey, 84.6% of respondents reported having access to the types of recreation opportunities and facilities that they want in the region vs. 12.2% reporting no access.
