Youth overweight & physical activity

Updated 1/21/19

The Healthy People 2020 target is to reduce the proportion of adolescents, aged 12-19 years, who are overweight or obese to less than 16.1%. Using the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data, the WCSD youth reported combined percentage is 28.1%, well above the Healthy People target but below Nevada.

  • *Proportion of adolescents, grades 9-12, who are obese (≥95th percentile for BMI by age and sex, based on reference data); overweight (≥85th percentile but <95th percentile)
  • YRBS is conducted in odd numbered years (WCSD middle school students were not surveyed in 2013);  not all questions are asked in every survey year and questions may also change

The Healthy People 2020 target to increase the proportion of adolescents that meet current Federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic physical activity and for muscle-strengthening activity has yet to be determined;  2010 target was for adolescents to engage in moderate physical activity for at least 30-minutes/day, 5 or more days/week.  The 2016 US Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth paints a grim picture for the country.

  • Prior to 2013, screen time question was just ≥3 hours of TV; now includes computer, video or TV
